Coffee Styles

Here are some common coffee types that you may see in your favourite coffee shoppe:

Americano

A coffee drink made by diluting espresso with hot water, resulting in a coffee similar in strength to drip coffee but with the flavour of espresso.

Cappuccino

A coffee drink made with a shot of espresso, steamed milk, and a thick layer of milk foam, often in a 1:1:1 ratio of espresso, milk, and foam.

Espresso

A concentrated coffee brewed by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans under high pressure. It is the foundation for many other coffee drinks.

Flat White

A coffee drink originating in Australia/New Zealand, similar to a latte but with a higher ratio of espresso to milk and a thinner layer of microfoam.

Latte

A coffee drink made with a shot of espresso and steamed milk, typically in a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio of espresso to milk.

Lungo

A “long” shot of espresso made with more water, producing a larger volume and a milder taste compared to a standard shot.

Macchiato

An espresso “stained” or “marked” with a small amount of steamed milk. There are variations, such as the latte macchiato (milk first) or espresso macchiato (espresso first).

Ristretto

A “short” shot of espresso made with the same amount of coffee but less water, resulting in a more concentrated and intense flavour.
